Edit: added a nice little texture. Looks way cooler this way, and fits the early 1800's atmosphere better.

I've been discussing Naomi Novik's Temeraire series with my friend, Michael. We agreed that we don't like Laurence pursuing a sexual relationship with Jane Roland. It seems kind of a hollow relationship to us: no real emotions, only sex. We both think Laurence - being the gentleman that he is - should not have a loveless relationship. Besides, neither Michael nor me are too fond of Jane (mind you, he has only read the first two books, and I have only read the first three, so we don't yet know what Jane is like in books four and five). Anyway, I told Michael: and what about little Emily? In a couple of years she'll be a young adult, and Laurence still wouldn't be too old to marry her. After all, it was not uncommon in the 1800's for a 40-year-old man to marry a 20-year-old girl. So currently Michael and I are sailing on the good ship Laurence/Emily, and I just felt I had to draw them. Novik's Temeraire series is still recommended to everyone! I'm LOVING these books!
*** Edit a few months later... Should you be interested, I have some Laurence/Emily fanfics that you can read here:
I never thought of the possibility that they could be a pair, but after I've read almost all of your fanfics about them, I'm a total Laurence/Emily-shipper <3
LOL. You know, when L started having an affair with Jane, I immediately thought that it wasn't right, that he needed someone who could love him (Jane apparently only wants sex with him occasionally) and give him kids (Jane will be too old for that once the series is over), and so I began thinking who could be suitable for him, and since Harcourt was already taken, I thought of the only possibly female, Emily.
Thanks. Not many have considered it, but many say that after having seen my fanart/having read my fanfics of them, they actually started to support LaurEmily.
I feel the same - although at least I can occasionally discuss it with my beta who corrects the grammar of my Temeraire fanfics. But outside him - no one (well, okay, my mother too, but she has only read the first three books so far...) It is a shame that so few people know the series, these books are simply bloody brilliant. Glad you like the pic, btw.
Cute thought, but I think in terms of emotional bonds it will be hard for Will to be more than Buds-with-Bennies where anyone of his species is concerned....
Glad you like the pic, btw.
